The types of rural settlements in some uplands of Japan may be classified as follows:
(1) Settlements in the valleys and on slopes of terraces (the first settlement sites in the uplands.) The forms are irregularly massive or linearly arranged. The settlements on the valley bottoms are situated along the foot of the valley sides and (Figs., 1. 3.) hardly ever on the valley floors, except when there are dry areas on it, and then only in spots here and there. (Figs. 4. 5)
(2) Settlements on the surface of the uplands.
1. Disseminated settlements.
a. The density of homesteads and roads in the area is intense. Their forms and arrangements are very irregular. (PL. I (I))
b. The roads are straight and arranged geometrically, but the arrangement of houses and homesteads are irregular. (PL. I (3))
c. Disseminated settlements in areas of latticed-type road systems. (PL. II (4))
2. Settlements arranged linearly.
d. Settlements having the same homestead construction as shown in 1 (b) but arranged linearly. (PL. I (2))
e. Regularly-planned-settlements (geregelte Planmässiggrundungsdor i ). Their construction are very similiar to those of ‘reihe Dorf’ in Germany. (PL. II. (4))
f. Houses composing the settlements closely crowded along the main highways. (Fig. 6)
3. Irregularly shaped settlements. Irregular way systems, and irregular arrangements of houses. (PL. II (2), 11 (2)) Fig. 7)
