The basic knowledge on the optieal crystallography is introduced as a basis of investigation of gemstone. In this part, the principle of the total reflection between an isotropic glass and an anisotropic crystal is explained, which is applicable to the measurements of principal refractive indices of crystals by means of the crystal refractometer.
