In 1919 Marcel Tolkowsky published "Diamond Design", in which he worked out the most desirable angles and proportions for the round brilliant cut of diamond. His figures have become so widely accepted as desirable cut, because these figures are adopted as standard to evaluate the diamond's proportions in the diamond grading system of Gemmological Institute of America ; on the contrary, many people have different opinions to his figures. In this article, Tolkowsky's logic is briefly reviewed following his original book, and is compared with the results of recalculation using mathematical formulae. It seems that Tolkowsky was intimate with diamond cutting, so he had already known the answers before devolping the theory, which caused errors and omissions in his work. For this reason his theory is tainted to get these figures. So I checked these errors and omissions in his work and arrived at more logical final results to compare with his figures.
