Abstract
This paper is to make an observation obtained from the results of a survey asking students to answer the truth of some statements concerning equality of mathematical expressions. Those results lead us to know how we understand mathematical expressions using a mapping from them to a set of numbers. That mapping also makes us to be aware of the importance of the preservation of equality, which probably we use unconsciously in mathematics.
