During the past five years (1933-1937), the author has made studies on the blood pressure in 1229 cases of leprosy (813 male, 392 female, from 5 to 77 years old).
In this examinations, various conditions such as sex, age, body length, body weight, girth of the chest, type and intensity of disease, active or non active stage, were taken. into consideration, and results could be summaried as follows.
1) In a majority of cases the blood pressure are hypotonic, it being about 15-25mm Hg. and lower than that of normal human bodies. 2) The well known fact, that the blood pressure is usually somewhat lower in woman than in man, is also approvable in cases of lepers.
3) The blood pressure increases also in leprosy parallel to the age, body weight, body length, girth of the chest, but decreases along with intensity of the sickness.
4) In nodular type, the blood pressure is generally lower than in macular or nervous type.
5) In active cases of leprosy, the blood pressure is usually lower than in non-active cases.
6) Serious cases of nodular type show lower blood pressure than mild ones, usually so than in macular and nervous types.
7) In mild cases of macular and nervous type the blood pressure is relatively near to that of normal human bodies.
