Signs and Symptoms of Actions Associated with Space : Unilateral Spatial Neglect and Dressing Disability

Abstract

  The external world can be understood only via space. This article focused on unilateral spatial neglect and dressing disability as signs and symptoms of actions concerning space. Unilateral spatial neglect (USN) is based on directional attention or awareness of spatial perception, and includes heterogeneous components. It has been reported that different brain networks are associated with several primary components of USN. Dressing disability (or dressing apraxia) is based on transition from the recognition of relationships between clothes and the body to action, i.e., external and personal space. The essential pathogenesis has yet to be clarified, although many ideas have been put forward, such as planotopokinesia by Marie, visual disorientation by Brain, constructional disorder, and mental rotation. These two kinds of signs and symptoms are associated with neuronal systems in the right hemisphere, and are considered disorders of reactions or actions based on space. However, we need to comprehend them from the perspective of associations among spatial recognition, the body, and action.
