Abstract

Purpose: To clarify the relationship between essential skills, training systems and achievement levels in municipality public health nursing practical training.

Method: A questionnaire was sent to 704 municipalities nationwide, and one trainer per facility that accepted practical training was asked to fill it out. Practical experience was classified as 80% or more, and the relationship between the practical training system and each experience item was analyzed by multivariable logistic regression analysis.

Results: Data from 180 organizations were analyzed (effective response rate 25.6%). The average number of students was 6.4 ± 9.4, and practice period was 12.4 ± 6.5 days. The experience rate of 9 items such as “home visit/one or more actual continuing visits” and “health examination/actually experience” was related to the period of practice (Odds rate=1.301 to 1.104). With good collaboration between the practical trainer and teachers, the rate of “health examination/acting independently following involved observation” increases significantly (Odds rate=8.698).

Discussion: In order to increase the rate of experiences; longer period of practice, better collaboration between public health nurses and teachers, and better instruction during practical training by teachers were suggested to be an important approach.
