Radiation measurement technologies as non-destructive assay developed for managing and safeguarding of nuclear wastes and nuclear materials are reviewed. The targets for the measurements are mainly solid or liquid state of the nuclear materials and transuranium elements treated in nuclear facilities. In the wastes, unknown transuranium nuclides might be involved. Gamma-ray and neutron counting technologies by active and passive methods are often used for measuring such materials. For liquid stream in reprocessing process, an inline α counting is effective. In this field, the optimum measurement technologies suitable for the respective targets have been required. The present paper also describes recent needs and current tendency.
