A new type of gas proportional counter utilizing a capillary plate with the capability of fine position resolution has been developed. The CGPC(Capillary Gas Proportional Counter) consists of a bundle of fine glass capillaries with electrodes on both surfaces. Gas multiplication was found to occur in each capillary of 100μm in diameter. To detect image of an α-particle and/or an X-ray, we have constructed an optical imaging apparatus which consists of the CGPC, a system of focusing mirrors and an Image intensified CCD camera. The first evidence was obtained that the light emission was due to gas multiplication occuring in a capillary. Using the apparutus, tracks due to an a-particle and an X-ray were detected.
