  A great number of applications of single bunch electron linear accelerators require a single bunch of higher current. The main developments to increase single bunch charge during the past decade were made in injectors with electron guns and grid pulsers, and many projects have been started with multi-prebunchers of subharmonic frequency. The conceptual designs of linear colliders are now in progress in order to accelerate two single bunches of electrons and positrons which are brought into head-on collision at the interaction point in the same manner as in an electron-positron storage ring. When a high-current single bunch passes through an accelerating cavity, a wake field is generated in the cavity. The longitudinal wake fields change the energy distribution of the single bunch, while the transverse wake fields change the emittance of the single bunch. As an usefull application of wake fields, the high-gradient electron acceleration by wake fields of a high-current driving bunch in an accelerating structure has been proposed.
