On August 5, 2022, a large crude oil tank exploded due to a lightning strike to cause massive fire at a tank terminal storing crude oil and petroleum products in Matanzas, Cuba. A boilover occurred in the early hours of the following day, killing 16 firefighters and injuring 146 others. The fire spread to three adjacent large tanks and was extinguished on August 12. This paper provides an overview of the incident based on articles on Cuban internet sites elTOQUE and Cubadebate.
