Abstract
A study was made on effect of cold work on fracture characteristics in steels of 50kg/mm2 strength by using COD test for crack initiation, press-notched Charpy test for arrest of crack propagation and V-notched Charpy test for reference.
The results are summarized as follows.
(1) It was shown to be quite probable that the press-notched Charpy test gives a good measure for crack arrestability in steels.
(2) Cold work gave much more shift of the transition temperature in the critical COD and less shift of that in the fracture appearance of press-noched Charpy test than that of V-notched Charpy test.
(3) It may be concluded from the COD and press-notched Charpy test results that cold work gives deterioration much to crack initiation characteristics and less to crack arrestability.
