JIS B 8284 (Quick Closure for Pressure Vessels) was issued in 1993 as the design standard of pressure retaining parts (including load transmission parts) to be used as quick closure devices of pressure vessels.
The quick closure devices are now widely adopted in various industries- for extraction of effective ingredients, sterilization or washing process in food, perfumery, medical and other industries; press-bonding facilities of glass; or for sintering facilities of ceramics and other newly developed materials. In these facilities, the closures are subjected to frequent opening and closing operations for charge of raw materials and take-out of processed materials, and various types of quick closurs are adopted there.
Because there were no standardized design methods available so far, notwithstanding the popularized use of these quick colusre devices, it was intended to standardize the design by the issue of JIS B 8284. In JIS B 8284, the quick closure devices have been classified to (1) clamp connection type (integral type and devided type), (2) integral type (clamp type with ratch, and sectional ring type), and (3) yoke frame type (rectangular frame and obround frame). This standard is applicable for closures of design pressre less than 1, 000kgf/cm2 and of design temperature less than 250°C.
In this article, the equations for design calculation standardized by JIS B 8284 have been explained for each of the categorized types of the closures.
