High power lasers such as CO2 and YAG laser have been used as flexible and controllable tool for manufacturing. Welding of thick plate is one of the most expected applications of these lasers, which have extremely high energy density so that high speed and high quality welding with low heat affection and low deformation will be achieved. This article provides the basic phenomena of laser welding such as cavity formation, the problems of deep penetration welding such as plasma absorption and the overview of recent researches in this region. It also provides the overview of laser-hybrid welding.
