Clutch size and ovum size of the Rana nigromaculata-porosa complex were estimated by examining the number and size of well developed ova in preserved ovaries. In R. porosa, the size of the second clutch was smaller, and less closely correlated to SVL, than the size of the first clutch. The size of the second clutch in Mabi (Okayama Prefecture) was somewhat larger than those in Tatsuda and Saya (Aichi Prefecture), Toyono (Nagano Prefecture), and Ebina (Kanagawa Prefecture). Although R. nigromaculata lays eggs only once in a breeding season, its clutch size was smaller than the size of the first clutch of R. porosa in proportion to its SVL. The ovum size of small (once hibernated) individuals of R. porosa brevipoda was smaller than that of large (twice or more hibernated) individuals of the same population.
