Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) which are synthesized by the endothelium are normal constituents of the vessel wall that maintains electronegativity. This is important to maintain the endothelium protected from platelets, leukocytes and other toxic molecules. The vessel wall selective permeability status is also maintained by GAGs. In the bloodstream, circulating GAGs has an anti-platelet effect by inhibiting thrombin and cathepsin-G enzyme released by leukocytes.
