Abstract
Understanding of vehicle driving environments is necessary for safe and smooth transportation. The road surface condition is one of the most important factors. We have developed a road surface condition detector using high peak power fiber laser with peak power of 200W. The laser beam is a pencil beam and the detector can discriminate the longitudinal (traffic stream directions) conditions by laser beam scanning. The measuring area of this detector is about ±50m and spatial resolution is about 5m. The detecting accuracy of three conditions (dry, wet and snow & ice conditions) is more than 98%
