Abstract
A 500-kV, 2800-MW (one of the largest transmission capacities in the world) DC oil-filled submarine cable line has been installed across the Kii Channel in Japan. Japanese cable manufacturers formed a consortium for supply and installation of the 500-kV DC link across the channel. Considering the regional factors including the possibility of storms during installation and the risks of cable damage caused by anchors, the latest laying and embedding technologies were employed to endure a reliable transmission line. Four submarine cables were laid across the Kii Channel as planned accurately and finally, installation of a 500-kV DC submarine cable line to transmit 2800-MW was successfully completed in July, 2000.
