It was in 1878 that M. Torigoe made a sectional translation of “Medical Jurisprudence, 5th American edition, 1861, ” a textbook by Alfred S. Taylor, a British scholar. This is prior to a Japanese translation by T. Ando (1879) of E. Buchner's German textbook. Then two other abridged translations of Taylor's textbook were issued in 1879. In 1880 S. Sato tried to make a complete translation of the above Taylor's book, 7th American edition, which did not come out in complete volume, though published in parts from 1880 to 1883.
Modern legal medicine in Japan was said to have been introduced mostly from Germany. The translation of Taylor's textbook was in those period of Meiji when British and American medical sciences were prevailing in Japan. Later German medicine was chiefly adopted while Anglo-American learning became secondary in the field of Japanese medicine.
This paper is a description of a short biography of Taylor as an author along with Japanese translators.
