The 1979 was a centenary of Index Medicus, the first worldwide comprehensive index of medical literatures, Although John Shaw Billings is wellknown as a founder of the Index, but Robert Fletcher, who was a real editor in chief of the Index taking most of the editorial works upon himself, is not so known as Billings is, This article presents a story of a background of the foundation age of Index Medicus and brief biographies of these gigantic heros who struggled to bring up Index Medicus to be an essential reference tool in the world.
