The Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) project is a long-term effort to help health professionals and researchers retrieve and integrate electronic biomedical information from a variety of sources. Its components are Metathesaurus, Semantic Network, Information Sources Map and Specialist Lexicon. The Grateful Med helps the user create and refine a search, then submits the search to NLM's mainframe. The Internet Grateful Med (IGM) was released in April 16, 1996. The IGM applies many features of the UMLS and provides assisted searching in MEDLINE.
