Recently journal titles are often found in the form of acronyms or initialisms on their covers. Some of them, such as JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association), AJR (American Journal of Roentogenology), and BMJ (British Medical Journal), are already handled as proper titles by the List of Journals in Indexed in Index Medicus (IM List) and Medline. How should librarians determine title changes from full titles? The case of CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal) was studied and its titles appearance was compared in the IM List, the List of Current Periodicals Acquired by the Japanese Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Libraries, and the Union List of Scientific Periodicals in European Languages, based on the rules from the second edition of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules. The results show diversity. It is proposed that serials librarians not only refer to published catalogues' decisions, but also analyze their bibliographic problems and establish their library's own standard for treating journal title changes.
