A new credentials program of the Japan Medical Library Association (JMLA) was enacted in November 20, 2003 in memory of the inauguration day to make a new start as non-profit-organization (NPO). The Committee of Education and Research of the JMLA began preparations for the certification of health sciences information professionals after the 72nd JMLA Annual Meeting in May 2001. This paper aims to record the establishment of a credentials program that certifies “JMLA Health Sciences Information Professionals”. Furthermore, some issues related to future steps of the program are briefly mentioned. A questionnaire regarding credentials and certification was sent to the chief librarians of the JMLA member libraries in January 2002. A short summary of the questionnaire findings is also described.
