A patient who complained the lack of Consumer Health Information (CHI) services in Japan contributed an article to the Igaku Toshokan in 1994. The article caused the first CHI service which was realized in 1997. This paper reviews the present situation of CHI services in Japan. Literatures were searched by the Web version of the Japana Centra Revuro Medicina (Igaku Chuo Zasshi) following handsearch of journals in the fields of medical, hospital and pharmaceutical libraries that were published between January 1994 and September 2004. About 150 relevant articles were found in the above sources, of which 93 were selected for the review. It turns out that (1) 2 hospitals started CHI service for patients in 1997 for the first time, (2) 2 hospitals affiliated with university and medical college came into the service in 2001 and in 2003 respectively, and (3) About 30 organizations maintain the service as of 2004. It is observed that while CHI services have been gradually increasing in number, there remain problems of staff arrangement, collection development, floor allocation and budget request, except a few cases.
