“A Handbook of Medical Library Practice” was first published in 1943, edited by Janet Doe. It was an attempt to provide job manual including bibliographic information of several kinds of collections for medical librarians, and at the same time to indicate the new professionalism of medical librarians. In this article, the historical development of the medical librarian's profession is described through the lives of important people, especially the editors of the Handbook. The editors highlighted include Marcia Noyes, Irene Jones, Mary Marshall, Eileen Cunningham and Janet Doe. They worked hard to establish the profession of medical librarian. The author believes introducing the early stage of medical librarians in the United States may be useful in motivating professionals in Japan.
