Abstract
This paper focuses on sight translation and examines the cognitive process at play during the task.Sight translation can be used as a training method for simultaneous interpreting since both requireprogressive translation as a key feature: rendering segments of the source text into the target text,while keeping the order of the segments as they are. The cognitive process used for sight translation will be explored in three stages: segmentation, retention, and reorganisation. The segmentation stage includes two aspects: the segmentation of linguistic expressions, and the construction of translation units for each segment. During the retention stage, two types of information contribute to the construction of translation units for progressive translation. Finally, at the reorganisation stage, information from the translation unit is reorganised at a conceptual level. Describing all three stages, this study provides a cognitive model for sight translation as a basis for empirical or applied studies.
