Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is the etiologic agent of localized aggressive periodontitis, a rapidly progressing and destructive disease of the gingival and periodontal ligaments. This study is to investigate the effects of green tea catechins on bacterial growth and leukotoxin activity of A. actinomycetemcomitans. The bactericidal effect against A. actinomycetemcomitans was shown by various catechins at 1 mg/ml concentration. Among these catechins, Cg showed the dramatic bactericidal effect. Escherichia coli showed similar results as A. actinomycetemcomitans. The green tea catechin with galloyl residue (Cg, GCg, ECG, and EGCg) was to inactivate leukotoxin from A. actinomycetemcomitans. The leukocyte cells were not killed by various catechins. The Cg solution did not turn yellowish for one month at room temperature. Cg may be very useful as an bactericidal and anti-enzymatic agent against A. actinomycetemcomitans.
