The use of nickel offers a means of increasing the wear resistance of machinable castings, such as cylinders, cylinder-blocks, liners and pistons for small type, high-speed diesel engines. But the production of nickel in Nippon is small as compared with other special elements produced especially with copper suitable for alloy cast irons.
Many studies on copper cast irons have been made successfully by investigators in Nippon and other countries, but the experiments of copper-chromium cast irons are few.
The author obtained excellent wear resistant copper-chromium cast irons for above castings which are described in this paper. Copper and chromium contents are: Cu 0.5~2.5% and Cr 0.3~0.7%
These copper-chromium cast irons were superior to nickel-chromium, chromiun-molybdenum and chromium cast irons as regards wear resistance and other physical properties.
