The authors have investigated the effects of sand grain and phenolic resin on the mechanical strength of shell mold. The results are as follows : (1) The packing efficiency is changed by the properties of sand, especialy sand grain shape Young's modulas show a max. value at well-packed sand ratio. (2) Youngs modulas is also affected by the flow characteristic of phenolic resin and the better the flow characteristic, the greater the strength. Moreover the flow characteristic of resin is much effective than its fineness. (3) Transverse strength has a certain relation with Young's modulas, therefore the use of well rounded sand and good flowable resin is effective on the improvement of mechanical properties of shell mold.
