A new diagnostic model has been developed based on the use of discriminant function method. It was found that the model was more reliable than the model proposed previously by the authors based on the use of the principal component analysis method. The model was used to analyze factors responsible in the formation of pin-holes in spheroidal graphite cast iron. Three factors, which are speed and temperature of pouring and kinds of sand with or without coal addition were selected as the main factors. This result was well consistent with known metallurgical facts.
