Pearlitic malleable cast iron was prepared by “R-process” in which black heart malleable cast iron is reheated, oil quenched and tempered and in “D-process” in which black heart malleable cast iron is directly quenched after the first stage graphitization and tempered. Specific gravity, mechanical properties, fatigue strength and fracture toughness were tested. The pearlitic malleable cast iron produced by D-process has higher specific gravity irrespective of hardness and higher elongation and fatigue strength at any hardness and tensile strength levels. Although a relationship is unfound between tensile strength and JIC as in spheroidal graphite cast iron, the iron produced by D-process always has higher JIC value than that produced by R-process.
