Abstract
Of 419 operated cases with gastroduodenal ulcer from 1949 to 1960 experienced in the Clinical Surgery of the Chiba National Hospital, we had statistical observations especially on the aged patients who were more than sixty years old. Simultaneously studies in the literature were also made.
Results
1) The incident of frequency was relatively low among the aged and it proved to be 7.8 per cent of total cases.
2) The operative mortality was as high as 6.6 per cent.
3) There was no significant difference in the incidence of perforation, however, there was a close relationship between increased operative mortality and perforation.
4) Regarding the period from onset to operation one fourth of the cases was less than 6 months; indicating that relatively short period was more common than the long term.
5) The most chief frequent complaint was in the upper stomache following hematemesis, melena and vomiting.
6) In regard to hemorrhage during the course hematemesis and melena were relatively frequent, however, results from the occult blood test showed no significant difference.
7) With regard to gastric acidity, most cases were hyperacidic and a significant increase of anacidic cases were noted.
8) Concerning the location of ulcer, it showed that the ratio of the proximal site to distal one was 1:2; with larger number in the proximal one. In size of lucers there was no significant difference.
