1) Bacteriostatic effects of various antibiotics on Döderlein's bacillus. It is said that Döderlein bacillus (D bacillus) plays the leading part in autopurification of normal female's vagina. And it has been an unsolved problem for every gynaecologist to find how D bacillus will be influenced by various kind of antibiotics which are widely used by the physicians. We also desire to select such drugs which will act exclusively on pathogenic bacteria but will have no influence on D bacillus.
From this viewpoint a comparative study was made on the bacteriostatic effects of various kinds of antibiotics on D bacillus.
Procedure
In this experiment 4 strains of bacteria and 12 kinds of the drugs were used. The method with filter paper discs was adopted. The Bacteriostatic effects of each drug was examined by measuring the size of the growth inhibition circle of the D bacillus.
Results
According to the strains little differences were recognized. First, Penicillin showed the strongest effect, second Erythromycin and Leucomycin showed about the same effects. Third, Chloramphenicol. Forth, Novobiocin, Streptomycin, Oxytetracycline, Tetracycline at d Oleandomycin. Fifth, Kanamycin showed the weakest bacteriostatic effects. Sixth and last, Colistin and Trichomycin showed no bacteriostatic effects.
2) Vaginal application of Kanamycin and Ddderlein's bacillus. From the above described experiments it was assumed by us that although Kanamycin (K) has a wide antibacteriostatic spectrum it has little influence cn D bacillus. So after applying K a clinical vaginel examination was performed.
Procedure
The patients who mainly complain of leukorrhea with nonspecific vaginitis and/cr cervicitis were supplied with K vaginal suppositories (cacao oil including K 25mg) and a solution of D bacillus culture (number of bacilli 36×10
8). Thereafter the presence or absence of leukorrhea and pruritus in the patients, was determined.
The vaginal pH was measured. And microscopic examination of the vaginal smears and cultures of vaginal canal was done and candida was observed. As a control a combination of penicillin vaginal tablet (P tablet) and D bacillus solution were used.
Results
The application of K suppositories only 2 or 3 times resulted in disappearance or decrease of leukorrhea, subjective effectiveness, little influence on D bacillus and improvement of vaginal purification to a certain extent.
While application of D bacillus solution combined with K suppository for 2 times showed more distinct vaginal settlement of D bacillus than in the group which only K suppositories were used. Besides, combined treatment was effective both subjectively and objectively.
In the group in which P tablets were combined with D bacillus solution, no vaginal settlement of D bacillus was recognized. And miscellaneous bacteria perished and the vagina became almost aseptic.
From the above mentioned results we might conclude that the combination of K suppository and D bacillus are most effective in treatment of nonspecific vaginitis and cervicitis and we are able to expect quick normalization of bacterial vaginal flora by this treatment.
