From a environment-hygienical point of view the author has investigated the air condition of the operating rooms as one of causes of postoperative infection at the Osaka National Hospital, one of the modern buildings.
The air condition of our operating rooms was found to be unsatisfactory with accurate examination.
There are many factors to contaminate the air of the operating rooms; first, they are the clothes and persons such as the patients who undergo operations, the operators and their helpers; second, the air itself when persons move in and flows into the operating room naturally.
In attempting to avoid the operating room infections the following facts were established so far as our operating room;
1) The personnel who works in the wards should not enter the operating room except regular members, just as the operating room personnel cannot go out without permission.
The mattresses, blankets, sheets and clothes useing in the wards should not be carried in the operating rooms.
2) The shutter should be furnished between the operating rooms and the wards as the origin of air contamination in order to prevent the air current contaminated with the caused micro-organismus.
3) Cleaning the ventilating ducts attached to the operating room.
4) And ultraviolet radiation in the operating room has reached to our convition that this method of decontaminating the air is very effective, if used in appropriate manners.
