A 3 months survey of psychiatric consultation work was made at 24 national hospitals from Oct. 1 till Dec. 31, 1970. All new patients referred from other somatological clinics in hospital for psychiatric cliaical practice were registered and totalled. The results were as following:
1) 13.1% of all new out-patients of whole hospital was referred to psychiatric practice.
2) More than half of the referred cases were from the department of intemal medicine, others were, in order of the number of cases, from surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrico-gynaecology, pediatrics and otorhinology.
3) Somatic diseases:
Most Cases from the department of internal medicine are those of nervous, digestive and circulatory diseases; those from surgery, injury and tumor; those from orthopaedics, fracture and injury; those from obstetrico-gynaecology, obstetric patients and tumor; those from pediatrics, nervous diseases.
4) Psychiatric diagnosis:
In order of the number of cases, neurosis, organic mental diseases, manic depressive psycllosis, psychogenous reaction, epilepsy, schlzophrenia, and toxic mental disturbance were seen most commonly.
5) The duration suffering from mental diseases of the referred cases is mostly less than one month, while in many cases of depressive illness more than one month.
6) 42% of all referred cases were so severe mentally and somatically that they had to be admitted immediately to the psychiatric ward, and to be treated by both psychiatrist and doctors of somatological department, with the trouble some good nursing care.
7) In 38.5% of referred cases psychiatric diagnosis and its treatment were informed to referred doctors of somatological department; 49.4% of referred cases were treated at the psychiatric out-patient clinic; 7.4% were admitted immediately to the psychiatric ward; 4% were sent to another psychiatric hospitals.
