Abstract

The author measured the red blood cell count, hemoglobin level, hematocrit value, bleeding time, and blood coagulation time on pregnant women in the 30th to the 33rd week of pregnancy, and also examined puerperal women for anemia on the 5th puerperal day.
As a result, the mean bleeding time was found to be 2 minutes 53 seconds in 68 pregnant women with anemia, and 2 minutes 23 seconds in 62 normal pregnant women, viz., the bleeding time remained within the normal range in both of the two groups of pregnant women.
The mean blood coagulation time was shown to be 6 minutes 33 seconds in 87 pregnant women with anemia, and 6 minutes 16 seconds in 75 normal pregnant women, viz., the coagulation time was within ten minutes in both groups of pregnant women, and hence may be said to be enhanced in them.
The mean hemoglobin level on the 5th puerperal day was revealed to be 11.2g/dl in 854 puerperal women, anemia with a hemoglobin level of not more than 11.0 g/dl found in 46.3% of them, and the hemoglobin level restored to the level during pregnancy in 53.7%.
It was examined on 276 puerperal women what an effect the loss of blood at labor would exert on the hemoglobin level at the puerperal stage in pregnant women with anemia. The hemoglobin level was restored to the level during pregnancy in 50.0% of 166 womem with a blood loss of not more than 200ml, and the hemoglobin level was not restored to the level during pregnancy in all women with a blood loss of not less than 300ml, viz., all found anemic.
By the survey made on 30 puerperal women who had been treated with iron preparations and coenzyme-type vitamin B12 for anemia during pregnancy, it was shown that the hemoglobin level was recovered to the level during pregnancy or higher in all of them, anemia with a hemoglobin level of not more than 11.0g/dl being encountered in only 20.0% of them. That is, it was found that the treatment of anemia during pregnancy would lead to early recovery of the hemoglobin level at puerperal stage.
