Abstract
Six hundred and thirty-six cases operated, between April 1970 and March 1972, for cardiovascular diseases in national sanatoriums were reviewed in this study.
Five hundred and seventy seven of these 636 cases were congenital heart diseases (CHD) and 59 were acquired heart diseases (AHD).
These 577 cases of CHD were as follow: VSD 207, ASD 149, PDA 70, TOF 42, PS 25, ECD 10 and others 74. 59 cases of AHD were as follow: mitral valvular diseases 37, aortic valvular diseases 6, arrhythmias 12 and others. 4.
Open heart surgery for CHD was performed in 244 cases under extracorporeal circulation and in 191 cases under deep hypothermia. The complication rate of extracorporeal circulation group was 25.4% and that of deep hypothermia group was 18.8%. The mortality of extracorporeal circulation was 4.5% and that of deep hypothermia group was 6.3%.
The results of the operations for CHD: excellent 517 (89.6%), good 27(4.7%), poor 2(0.4%) and died 31(5.4%). The results of the operations for AHD: excellent 35 (59.3%), good 17 (28.8%), poor 2 (3.4%) and died 5 (8.5%).
