Abstract
Based on the original work of Mackay it should be pointed out that active chronic hepatitis is a sine qua non in the concept of lupoid hepatitis. There will be no problem in case that both LE-cell and LE-symptoms coexist with active chronic hepatitis. The case in defect of either of the two can be accepted as a non-typical one. The case in which active chronic hepatitis has been preceded by LE-symptoms is also regarded as one type of lupoid hepatitis. Generally speaking it should be considered that “lupoid hepatitis” is the term indicating an autoimmune aspect of liver injury, because it is uncertain whether it is a disease entity or not. Concerning lupoid hepatitis the terminology, classification, relationship with viral hepatitis and some other problems were discussed.
