Abstract
Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) in 72 senile patients with neurologic diseases, 16 senile healthy volunteers and 17 young healthy volunteers were recorded. In the senile volunteer group, the mean latency of I-peak was delayed and the mean I-III interpeak latency (IPL) was shortened in comparison with the young volunteer group. Elongations of I-III IPL and I-V IPL were observed in each group with Parkinson's disease, cerebrovascular disease, and senile dementia. However, these findings were not specific.
The elongations of IPLs were significantly correlated to the clinical features of the degree of swallowing disturbance. It was concluded that technicians should consider these points in examinations of ABR.
