Abstract
The patient was a 76-year-old woman complaining anorexia and epigastralgia. Endoscopic examination revealed the presence of a Borrmann Type 3 advanced cancer. Histological study indicated that the tumor was moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma. Invasion of the tumor to the left lobe of the liver and to pancreatic head was demonstrated by computerized tomography (CT). Plasma level of AFP was 840 ng/ml. After treatment with radiation (52 Gy) and hyperthermia (9 times), CT and endoscopic examinination clearly demonstrated tumor regression. At this time, AFP level was decreased to 384 ng/ml. The tumor size was increased gradually and plasma AFP level was increased to 41, 300 ng/ml. She has deceased after 1 year and 7 months from first examinination. Immunof luorescent stain of AFP in gastric cancer cells of autopsy specimen was positive. Combination therapy with radiation and hyperthermia was effective in the patient and plasma levels of AFP was helpful in assessing the efficacy of the treatment.
