Abstract
Combination endoscopic papillary balloon dilatation and biliary stenting was carried out in 5 cases of common bile duct stones (CBD-s) with obstructive jaundice and cholangitis. These cases were the elderly and with general complications. Therapeutic results of these cases were determined. After the treatment, obstructive jaundice and cholangitis were improved immediately in all 5 cases. Biliary stenting has been continued for 11-18 months in 4 cases and the stent was removed at the gastrectomy in 1 case. Migration of stent occurred in 1 case, but the harmful complications including infection were not encountered.
Endoscopic treatment for CBD-s is a well accepted procedure. However, the complete extraction of CBD-s is in need of several therapeutic sessions and endoscopic nasobiliary drainage, and can not be achieved due to various risk factors. In such cases, especially with old age and high-risk for treatment, biliary stenting is a less invasive method and may obviate the damage of general complications. The purpose of this method is avoiding obstructive jaundice and cholangitis due to CBD-s impaction. Endoscopic biliary stenting is a safe and effective treatment for CBD-s in elderly and high-risk patients.
