Abstract
[Purpose] In this study, we focused on the muscle strength and range of motion of the shoulder and hip joints as factors related to Baseball pitching velocity. The aim of this study was to provide scientific knowledge to improve the pitching performance of pitchers by clarifying the factors affecting pitching velocity. [Participants and Methods] The subjects included were 20 college baseball pitchers who were practicing pitching in games. The range of motions and muscle strengths of the shoulder and hip joints were measured using a photographic and a manual muscle strength measuring device, respectively. [Results] Multiple regression analysis using the stepwise method showed a significant regression equation with the two independent variables: hip external rotation range of motion of the supporting leg and hip external rotation muscle strength. The contribution rate was 51%. [Conclusion] In other words, 51% of the ball velocity could be explained by the external rotation muscle strength and external rotation range of motion of the supporting leg hip joint.
