With a view to estimate the sulphide capacities of slags used in hot metal pretreatment processes, the sulphide capacities of CaO–Al2O3–SiO2–MgO, CaO–Al2O3–SiO2–MnO and CaO–Al2O3–SiO2–MgO–MnO slags in low SiO2 concentration region were measured in the temperature range 1673–1773 K. The gas–slag equilibrium technique has been used for these measurements.
From the results obtained, it was found that the MgO and MnO increased the sulphide capacity values of slag. A new empirical model based on optical basicity for sulphide capacity prediction of these slags was developed using the measured values of the present work and literature.
