Various types of yard machines have been introduced in raw material yards to rationalize material handling. Those yard machines are recently operated by automatic remote control systems from the control center. Two flat type trailing cables (one for power, and the other for control) have been generally used for power and control signals transmission between the control center and the yard machine.
This conventional transmission system, using metal cables, includes such problems as trouble some slipring maintenance, unbalanced cable service life-transmission capacity, and difficult power cable-control cable composition.
Authors have succeeded in development and practical application of “the Optical-power composite trailing cable slipring-less transmission system” using optical signal transmission technique, which can overcome the above problems, permits the integration of a control transmission system and a power transmission system, and improves the reliability, maintainability, and economy of the automatic remote control system.
