Abstract

Additive manufacturing (AM) technology has been attracted attention as a new process capable of manufacturing products with complex geometries and functionalities that are difficult to fabricate via conventional processes. Additionally, AM technology has been widely recognized one of the essential processes for “smart factory” in near future due to digital manufacturing technology. In this paper, the trends of the development of powder bed fusion (PBF) and directed energy deposition (DED) machines as well as the development of metallic materilas for AM were introduced. Moreover, the outline of the recent research development of AM technology was reviewed and the trends of monitoring technology in PBF-LB (laser beam) process was described including the research results of the author's group. Finally, a perspective on AM technology was stated.
