Abstract

A lenslike glass fiber optics with a parabolic variation of refractive index has been developed. This light-focusing fiber optics named SELFOC**** ® has the characteristics that anoptical image transmission and realization of a lens with tiny aperture or with extremely short focal length are possible.
In this paper, we discuss theoretical and experimental properties of this light-focusing fiber optics from the point of view that the array of this fiber optics (multi-lens) can be used as an optical system in the optical data processing.
From the experimental results, light transferred characteristic of multi-lens is pointed out to be well compared with typical spherical lens and the contrast of spatial frequency characteristic is estimated approximately 0.5 at 10 lines/mm.
For the application of this multi-lens, the main obstacle is chromatic abberration and now the improvement of glass material has been done.
