Abstract

The roots of Ergonomics go back to the Polish scholar Wojciech Bogumił Jastrzębowski who coined the term “Ergonomics”, which is derived from the Greek ergon (work) and nomos (principle or law). The year was 1857. Jastrzębowski created the concept of Ergonomics, which meant the Science of Work as described in his article in Polish in the weekly “Przyroda i Przemysł (Nature and Industry)” published in 1857.
The Central Institute for Labour Protection - National Research Institute (CIOP-PIB), Warsaw, Poland, published a reprint translated from the original Polish into English entitled “Wojciech Jastrzębowski - AN OUTLINE OF ERGONOMICS, or THE SCIENCE OF WORK based upon the truth drawn from the Science of Nature”, which was the Commemorative Edition published in 2000 on the occasion of the XIVth Congress of the International Ergonomics Association and 44th Annual Meeting of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. The original Polish version was translated into English by Teresa Bałuk-Ulewiczowa.
It is our great pleasure to present this historic book in the Japanese language through an agreement with Danuta Koradecka, the editor of the reprint and the Director of the CIOP-PIB, Warsaw, Poland.
