A new method for measuring the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices of liquid crystal materials was devised by considering the multiple reflections and interference in the liquid crystal cell. The refractive indices can be obtained from the numerical fitting between measured values and calculated values of the amplitude ratio at one incidence and phase retardation at three incidences. We experimentally confirmed the validity of our new method and this method is effective for the design of high-quality liquid crystal displays.
