5-1 Face Detection Errors caused by Video Compression

Abstract

We investigate how video compression artifacts affect face detection performance. VP6-encoding yields a gradual fall of the recall ratio as the bit-rate is reduced, especially for small faces. Recall and precision also fluctuate with bit-rate, implying interaction between sizes of block noise and rectangle features used by the face detector.
