Abstract

Research is being conducted on a high-speed tape transport system suitable for a thin tape as part of the effort to increase the volume-recording density and reduce search time. This study investigated the control of tape tension when running a thin tape with a belt-driven tape transport system used for a computer storage. In a belt-driven tape transport system, it is known that a thinner tape must support a greater burden because of the big changes in tape tension at the start and finish of tape winding. Our study established that tape tension control to reduce such tension can be achieved by altering the belt-winding angle, moving the position of the belt roller on the supply-reel side. The results show that the stable and high-speed transport of a thin tape is possible.
